 Max Gabrish

We received this wonderful letter from Ms. Denise Gabrish of Troy, MI about Max.

Dear Friends,

In May 0f 2000 I went to a "meet your new best friend" event at the Detroit Zoo looking for a canine to share my home with.  What I found instead was Max... a whole lot of trouble.  He wasn't even close to being my first choice.  The other dogs were already adopted, but he seemed clam and well behaved, just what I wanted.  Little did I know he was "tired" when we met.  He slept in my car on the ride home and when he woke up, to my horror, he was a high energy, intelligent, manipulative creature!  I even tried to give him back several times because we just were not bonding well, but fate would always throw up a road block.  My vet even picked up on our troubled relationship.  She told me Max needed to know that I was in charge and that I was too quiet and passive with him.  At first I resented having to show Max all the time that I was in charge, but once he realized I was serious, things changed drastically. I owe fate a big thank you for stepping in and keeping us together.  I know now that Max and me were meant to be.

In Max's behalf, I thank all of you for your hard work in caring for the dogs and cats that you help each year.  I wish you much success in the coming years.

Sincerely,

Denise Gabrish

 Leo and Luke Thatcher

Charlene Thatcher adopted Leo and Luke in June of 2008.  They all share her home in Gibsonberg, Ohio.  Charlene says that 4 year old Luke loves to sit in her bedroom window sills, so he can watch the birds and enjoy the weather.  She says that 4 year old Leo enjoys running up and down her stairs chasing a noisy ball.

Charlene writes:

Leo was diagnosed with urinary tract disease, but has gotten better with antibiotics, but I'm still concerned about him.  He's had blood in [his] urine, so I'm keeping a close eye on him.  Luke is doing well and I can tell he really loves Leo, so I will never separate them.  They have put a joy in my life.  They are so cute together!!

 Leon Lokuta

There's a new kitten in the town of Southgate, his name is Leon.  Denise and Russ Lokuta adopted Leon and took him home when he was just 6 months old.  They say he loves chasing their other cat Smokey.

A note from Leon:

I was adopted on July 19, 2008.  My new family is great!  I kept my shelter name, Leon, because I have a brother Smokey, who came to this family about a month before I did.  I thought "Smokey and Leon" sounded like a great place to get some ribs and fish!  I get along great with Smokey.  Smokey said that he was very happy to have a little brother to play with.  Smokey is about 1 year old.  I'm the dark, handsome guy in the pictures.  I've got my very own bed, but I have to share all my toys with Smokey.  Smokey told me that he was a stray cat.  I'm glad I wasn't a stray cat.  I told him that I was at the shelter for only a short time which wasn't bad (except for the barking dogs!).  The people at the shelter were very nice to me.  I was so glad when my new mom & dad along.  My new home is big, with lots of rooms  to run and hide.  Smokey has to come find me, then I chase him.  I also met my grandma & grandpa, who told me I was very sleek and handsome.  I would agree!   I'm getting bigger and soon I'll be as big as Smokey!  I love when my mom or dad snuggles me real close to their faces and then I give them a lick on the cheek to tell then that I love them.

Phoebe "The BEBE" Bailey

Angelique Bailey sent us a note about the kitty she adopted:

A Cinderella cat story...

5 month old Kyrie changes her name to

Phoebe the 'BEBE'

Since adopted on August 10th by WMU student DC2007 grad Angelique Bailey, she has gone from cage to condo & two sibling cats.

Phoebe took not even a day to get comfortable and was instantly a hit with the two Siamese already in residence.  The family adores her and she quickly became the little princess of Wilson Blvd.  She is so wonderful!

Thanks to the animal shelter for adding to our feline family.

Mirshka Latosh

Mirshka and Cho-Cho

Mirshka came to live with D. Latosh August 12, 2008 in Dearborn.  Two year old Mirshka loves to roll over and talk to D.

Mirshka is starting to get along with her new family.  She has a few 'hidie-holds' in the house and loves to sit in a few of the windows too.

Mittens P.

Mittens name was Maleom at the shelter when Suzanne adopted him.  Three year old Mittens now lives in Detroit with his new family.  Suzanne tells us that his favorite toy is a blue and pink mouse.  She says, "Mittens is very loveable.  He likes his new home.  He likes to sit in the window and look out.  He's a good cat and I'm so glad I adopted him.  My son and I love him."

This spot is hoping for a photo of Mittens

Trouble Losiewicz

Trouble and Lucky

Terry Losiewicz of Detroit adopted Trouble on August 20, 2008.  Ten week old Trouble was named Swiper at the shelter. Terry says that Trouble loves playing with ball that goes in a circle.  It is also a scratching post in the middle.

He is always causing trouble.  He loves to sneak on the older cats and grab and bite their tails.  He thinks Daisy and Lucky, my small dogs, are cats with a funny meow.  He follows Lucky around and loves to jump on his back and knock him down and bite his tail.  He is not afraid of anything.

Max Robinson

One year old Max was adopted by Wayne and Aimee Robinson of Plymouth on September 23, 2008.  They say that Max loves to go for long walks and play with his sister Samantha (Sam).

He delights in sharing their toy basket.  He has turned the living room into his playroom.  He loves to scatter their toys all over the room.  We love having Max and couldn't imagine life without him.  We never thought we could love another dog as much as our Sam and Sadie, who we lost to cancer two years ago, but Max has proven we can.  He has most definitely wrapped his paws around our hearts!

Max is definitely living the good life now and friends and family laugh when we tell them-we live with our dogs!

I don't know if you use pictures of adoptees after they have been adopted but feel free to steal mine of summer and sylvester (aka "nick") for the web site/news letter

Kylee Baker Update

Yvonne sent us a lovely email update.

Kylee really enjoyed her first Christmas as a part of our family.  She is just wonderful

with our two small grandsons.  She has never as much as given them a low growl!

She is a perfect addition to our family and we love her to pieces.  Since we live in

Allen Park and they just passed a Pit Bull ordnance on "dangerous Pit Bulls"; we are

ready to go get our Good Citizen certificate.  We know Kylee will pass with flying

colors.  She is the most gentle dog around.

A new coat and a big bone.

Holly Belle Update

Here are a couple of pictures of Holly Belle, the sweet little dilute calico senior kitty that I adopted in approximately July 2006.  I'm sorry for being so late in sending you these pictures.  I cannot adequately express what a very sweet cat Holly has been.  I have given her excellent veterinary care and, along with a few adjustments to her diet, Holly is doing fine.  Holly has been exactly the cat I was searching for, to be a friend for Frosty Pee-Wee.  She was listed as 7 years old, and he was 12, when I adopted her from DAS.  She is a perfect little lady and very affectionate; and was the perfect mate to Frosty, for the last year of his life (her first year in my home).  They were inseparable, and she groomed Frosty lovingly, and he loved that.  Tragically, I had to have him put to sleep, due to cancer.  Holly mourned and would frequently call for Frosty to return, for several months after he went to heaven.  Although Holly was listed as a stray, I can't imagine why...because she had a ring around her neck from having worn a collar, I believe she probably belonged to someone who may have passed away, and that someone may have put her out on the street.  But that is Holly's little secret, and I have promised her a permanent home for the rest of her life!  I also adopted Mr. Sonny Boy off of the street, but because he is a little rough with Holly, and will jump on her, I keep them separated...and that works out just fine.
