Rico and Snickers

Snickers and Rico

Rico

Hi Stevie,

Just thought I'd let you know how Snickers is doing.  He is doing wonderfully, pretty much just like a regular house cat now.  He is very sweet and loving.  He is still afraid of other people, but with me and Charlie he is very affectionate, a lap kitty, and sleeps in bed all the time with Charlie.  He is playful and loves attention.  I am still amazed at the transformation from when we first took him in (like night and day).  He found his "voice" and now purrs and talks to us all the time. (Note:  Gail rescued Snickers - he was very feral and she worked with him to be the "lap kitty" she describes.  Many thanks to all those who work with feral kitties.)

We adopted a new kitty from the shelter (Dodger) to keep him company.  They are doing great as you can see from the attached picture.  They said Dodger was timid and shy but he has really opened up and is a bundle of joy and energy.  I think he just needed a loving home.  He also loves attention.  His name is now Rico.  It's a blast to watch him and Snickers play.  They both meet us at the door after work.  They really took to each other rather quickly.

I hope all is well with you.  Do you know the date of the spaghetti dinner in March?

Thanks again for all the help you gave previously with Snickers.  It's been a year since we took him in and we love him tremendously and now we also love little Rico.

Kimba Hall
Kimba was adopted on January 26, 2004.  He is shown here on his first day home.  We love this crazy cat!  Kimba is so playful and fun.  Our children (ages 6 and 4) adore him.  He is a great playmate.  The most amazing thing is the bond that has formed in such a short time between Kimba and our dog Nessie.  Every day, they groom each other - the dog has never looked so good!  They also play and nap together.  His  favorite toy is a blue feather on a stick.  Kimba is a great pal to all of us.

Little Bun, Xander, Jayne, and Gunn Thorne/Williams

Jayne (adopted 1/6/2003) is one very sweet, friendly 12-pound New Zealand boy (he thinks he's a dog!). His favorite activities are eating, being petted, and eating while being petted.

Gunn (adopted 1/6/20030 is our little loppy emperor. He likes to critique the goings-on in his kingdom, and gives a disapproving <thump!> to anything that doesn't pass muster (his Daddy's bass guitar-playing, for example!). When not passing judgment, Gunn is busy trying to court the affections of Kaylee, the pretty Dutch-girl that joined our warren in October 2003.

Little Bun (was Jingle at the Shelter) and Xander were  adopted on 1/24/2003.  Little Bun is our resident Crabbit (Crabby rabbit). We suspect that he was a child's pet (major bunny no-no) and seriously mishandled before being brought to the shelter. He was very mistrustful of hands in particular when his first came home, and lunged and bit at anything that came near him. A year of patience, love, tears, and a lot of Neosporin is finally starting to pay off. LB is more confident and secure these days. Although he will still grunt and growl if someone reaches into his cage, he is slower to bite now. He's also much more receptive to being petted, as he comes to realize that hands don't hurt here. He'll even reward us with snuggling and grooming...but only when he think's no one's looking. He has a rep to maintain, you know!

Nina and Rickie Bollin

No, you are not seeing double. Sharon Bollin found Rickie's mirror image on Petfinder.  The new little girl is Nina.  She was taken into a Jackson Animal Shelter and had the injured eye.  The shelter did not give any treatment to the dog, so after 6 painful days they finally allowed a cat rescue person take the dog.  The eye needed to be removed by that time (same eye as Rickie).  But the rescue person allowed Nina to eat cat food until she blew up to twice her normal weight.  The Bollins decided to rescue the dog not only because she looks just like Rickie, but were afraid she would explode from the cat food. She has already lost a few pounds under the Bollin's care. Nina originated from a puppy mill so we think it could even be possible that she could be Rickie's mother.

Jake Mattia

Jake came from a litter of 9, which was taken from a drug raid in Detroit by Animal Cops at the Detroit Michigan Humane Society.  Jake was 7 weeks old when we brought him home on November 3, 2003.  As some of the readers may or may not know, Michigan Humane Society puts all Pit Bulls to sleep.  But, Jake was lucky that I was working for the shelter when the litter came through.  We had 1 week to find them placement, so we contacted Elaine at the Dearborn Animal Shelter and she agreed that we should try and save the litter.  So the story goes – Jake was saved and we just want people to know that Jake is a sweetheart and loves kids, people, and other animals.  We are sad that Pit Bulls have fallen into the wrong hands and have taken a bad reputation because of bad people.  As a puppy, any puppy in the right home with knowledge of the breed can be a wonderful companion and pet.

His favorite thing to do is swimming and playing with Pepper, our German shorthair mix.

Cujo Cicirelli

My little Cujy Dog has been a life saver – I recently lost my dog and he was my everything – my baby & my best friend.  And when he passed on, nothing was the same.  I felt empty.  At first I didn’t want another dog, I didn’t want to feel that kind of hurt again.  And then I met Duke – now know as Cujo – and I feel in love with him the minute I saw him.  He can never take the place of my old dog, Jake, just like no one will ever take his place, but Cuj has filled my heart with love again.

I picked Cuj up on Monday, April 26, 2004 and I was told he was 8 weeks old.  I gave him a bath right away and ever since he’s loved the water.  He has is own pool and he loves to play in the sprinklers.  My uncle lives on a lake so he will be taking him swimming there which I’m sure he will love.  He’s a very smart dog – was potty trained within 2 weeks.  He tricks include sit, laydown, rollover, and shake.  He loves to go on car rides especially when we are going to grandma’s or to the pet supply.  He is just an all around great addition to our family.  Don’t let the name fool you – I picked him and my husband name him.  My husband is a hockey fam and named him after the goalie from the Red Wings -  Cujo – but I call him Cujy.

Thank you everyone from the Dearborn Animal Shelter for Cujy.  We love him and Cujy says thank you too.

Update as of 7/1/05 - Cujo is a very happy puppy! He loves to play ball and go swimming in the lake. He is full of life, love and personality.   See Joe CiCirelli

Toby Mercedes

I just wanted to thank you for taking care of Ziggy (his name now is Toby) while he was in your shelter.  He is a happy cat and I am the happiest person ever since I got him.  I am including a couple of pictures.  He just wanted to say Hello.

Thanks again,
Dr. Francia Mercedes

Dozer Peterson (update)

Dear Friends,

Thank you for all you do!  I'm reminded daily of how committed you are to the animals.  We adopted Dozer over 4 years ago and he has been the greatest addition to our family thus far!  Whenever anyone comments on him, we rave about the Dearborn Animal Shelter.

Sincerely,
Jennifer                                               See Dozer's original Happy Tail from 2001

Cosmo Corbett

Cosmo is a 5 year old male German Shorthair Pointer that was adopted on June 25, 2004. He's a 70 lb. ball of energy, friendliness, and he is a huge show off. He has adjusted wonderfully to his new home and is happier than ever! His tail is constantly wagging. His favorite things to do are go for walks and car rides, and he especially likes being allowed to run around off-leash. His favorite toy is any stuffed animal, although they don't last long (he rips them up almost instantly). He has chewed apart just about every toy I have given him so far, even his Kong! He is definitely a chewer! Cosmo also has had the opportunity to meet my parents' cats - which was quite an experience - definitely the prey drive of a hunting dog! Cosmo and I are currently taking the Beginner obedience class through the shelter, and he is learning fast. I hope to continue his training and take more classes in the future.

When Cosmo and I go for walks, people constantly stop us on the street to tell me what a beautiful dog he is. I have actually had cars that are driving down the street stop and back up to ask about him! One man in particular said he was one of the most good-looking German Shorthairs he has ever seen, asked if I hunt him (no, I don't hunt), and if I have bred him (nope, he's neutered). It's hard to believe that a dog that gets so many compliments and comments everywhere I go spent most of the time at his former owner's house in the basement. I'm so glad I am able to give him the home he deserves!

Lucy Van Fleteren

Jim Van Fleteren  is the Friends designer for the Lions calendar.  He adopted Lucy in June 2003 when handling the layout on the 2004 calendar and he is absolutely in love with her!  Jim lives in Milford.  He says Lucy has been absolutely perfect--minus her obsession with deer poop.

Pretty Ella

We adopted 2 dogs, Razzamatazz and Steve, now named Ella and Benny on 5/6/04 and 8/04.   They love to play tug of war with each other with our socks.  They both love to play and cuddle.  Very affectionate.  Ella will cry if she isn't in the bed with us and we think it's so funny how much personality they both have.  Ella will sleep on her back and snore so loud, while Benny will constantly nudges her to stop snoring cause he can't sleep.  It's like they are an old married couple.  We just love them and are so grateful to have them and to give them the good life they deserve.   We all thank you so much.

Homer

His original name was Dionte and we changed it to Homer.  Homer is doing well. We've had him a year now this month (as of 3/31/05).  He was 41 pounds when we adopted him and he is now 70 pounds of muscle.  He's an ox!  :)  But he is great. Still goes to the park every day to play and is still nice to our kitties.  We couldn't be happier with him.

Thanks again, Anita.

George Fradkin

When we first looked for a cat at the shelter, we saw a fuzzy little black cat zipping around in his cage.  When I went up closer to the cage to take a look at him, he ran over and reached through the bars and wapped me on the head.  We knew he was the one for us.  His shelter name was Rocket, we didn't understand why until we had him for a little while.  He randomly makes noises and takes off running for no reason, much like a rocket.  However, he goes by the name of George in our house now.  George is a fun loving, bumbling, person needing companion who never tires of seeing his owners or others friends!  A very social guy, George likes to be part of the action and has even come up to lick a bald friend's head.  We love our George and had a great experience adopting him from the shelter.  Attached is a picture of him that went out in our Christmas card this year.

Sooty Sherry

We adopted Sooty (Shelter name was Kennedy) from the shelter in May of this year, and life hasn't been the same since!  She quickly found her way into our hearts as well as our home, and is a fun loving cat who loves to play constantly!  Her favorite game is "hide and seek".

We are very grateful to the Dearborn Animal Shelter for giving us the opportunity to take care of Sooty, and we hope to adopt a playmate for her before too long.

Carson Theisen

I adopted Carson after my first adopted kitten died from Feline Leukemia, and he has made the healing process so much easier. We still miss Nicky, but Carson has settled into our hearts and our family and we couldn’t ask for a better cat! This picture is of Carson in his bed, where he curls up to sleep every night!

Carson lives with his 4 family members, and second cat, Kiwi.  Carson loves to chase the laser pointer and play wrestle with Kiwi

Erin Theisen
